I’m not an expert on collagen, but started using it after seeing others share the positive results they were seeing in their skin, nails and hair. At 42 my hair was increasingly getting thinner, so I was curious if collagen would help with that. And after I read all the other benefits it purports I knew it certainly wouldn’t hurt anything!
Some background info: Collagen is a fibrous protein that serves as an important building foundation for skin, tendons, joints, other connective tissues and bones. My personal experience is this: As I mentioned above, my hair had really thinned down over the years. This was my 1st update after 4m of mostly daily use (I began in Nov 2021): I feel my nails are healthier, and my hair is growing more quickly and is healthier. I also was having issues with an achy elbow that I was *this* close to going to PT for, as it was nagging me for months, but just when I was about ready to go to the appt, it started feeling better (I had x-rays to rule out serious injury). I can’t be 100% certain this was due to the collagen, it’s correlatory, but it does have really beneficial properties for your joints, etc. And without any other intervention, it’s now healed.
2nd update (May 2022): It has now been 6m since I started almost daily use (I add a 2nd scoop if I have a 2nd cup of coffee or tea in the afternoon, maybe 3x/week) and I really, truly am happy with how thick my hair is. I feel like it has reversed ~5 years of loss/thinning. My nails are strong, my achy elbow has not returned, and I know it’s doing a bunch of good internally that I can’t necessarily measure.
3rd update (August 2025): I’m about to turn 46 in a couple months, I’ve been using this for 5 years now! I can honestly say my hair has never been longer nor healthier. I trim it, and it bounces back immediately. I get compliments on it regularly. I do at least 2 miles per day on my treadmill, and am active outdoors hiking regularly as well. I firmly believe the collagen is helping keep my body strong from the inside. The invisible stuff you don’t see. When I travel I don’t bring it with me, but I’m always happy to return home to it and add it back into my routine. Since it’s not cheap, and my husband and I both feel it’s really important, we generally each use it every other day. We just go through too much if we both use it daily. But I can say for sure, I will not ever be without it!
I add it to my coffee or tea, cannot taste a thing. My Hubby had to do IT work in an ag-processing plant years ago, and is forever scarred of the smell associated with being there. They processed meat, made collagen and a bunch of other stuff. So he’s always had this fear of collagen tasting terrible, like the smell he associates with that place. He was super reluctant, but agreed after 1st try, couldn’t taste a thing. It’s so exciting to me when a brand new product comes out that I know has been in the works for a long time! Poofy recently added a more intensive, deep conditioner to their current offerings which include a variety of leave-in spray conditioners, and everyday cream conditioners. The new offering is intended to be more of a hair mask, something you let sit on your hair longer than you typically would with your everyday conditioners. I followed the directions for the pre-shampoo treatment which are: Apply generously to dry hair from roots to ends. Let sit for 15–30 minutes, then rinse and follow with your favorite Poofy Organics shampoo. What’s my favorite Poofy shampoo? Mighty Mane! Look for a review of that in the future.
I also appreciated the timely nature of this product being added to the Poofy portfolio as I had just come back from a weekend of camping with some family members and saw one of them pull out some old school VO5 bright yellow oil packets and use them for a deep treatment. Curious about what’s in those? Definitely not something I’d recommend!!
What’s in Poofy’s? Looking at that ingredient list makes me SO happy. Talk about a fantastic organic ingredient selection!!! This product is chock full of awesome, organic ingredients. But there is something new that has not been used in a Poofy product before so I wanted to highlight it. What is Montanov 202? It’s an emulsifier which is an ingredient that helps blend the oils and water to give the product that creamy consistency. Montanov 202 is a combo of the following ingredients: Arachidyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Arachidyl Glucoside. Montanov 202 is a 100% natural emulsifier derived from renewable vegetable sources, specifically from glucose and fat derived from rapeseed oil. It is palm-free, which is more & more sought after in those seeking natural & organic products. Source

With straight, not super thick hair, conditioners often leave me greasy. Typically I’ll use a bit of cream conditioner in the winter months mainly to combat dry, static-filled air. In the warmer months generally a few spritzes of leave-in conditioner is all I’ll use. So I was curious if that’s what would happen with this product. Would it leave me super greasy?

I applied it and let it sit 1/2 hr. My hair is quite long as you can see. I applied it to dry hair so it took quite a bit of product. Next time I will wet it down first. I know I used more than I needed because of my hair being dry. But maybe it was good that it really soaked it up too?! Honestly, I don’t love the smell. It’s not awful, but it’s not lovely either, a bit medicinal is the best way I can describe it. I avoided conditioning my roots and bangs and really just focused on the length of my hair. I put it up in a bun and set my timer for 1/2 an hour.
I truly feel, and think you can see below how shiny it is in the after pics. I made sure to rinse it realllllllly well! Then shampooed it, and rinsed really well again and didn’t finish with any additional conditioner.
The suggested uses include: “As a Conditioner: After shampooing, apply a generous amount to damp hair, focusing on mid-lengths to ends. Leave on for 2–3 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Use as needed for regular conditioning.
As a Deep Conditioning Hair Mask: Apply to clean, damp hair from roots to ends. For best results, cover with a shower cap and leave on for 15–30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Use 1–2 times per week for deep hydration and softness.
As a Pre-Shampoo Treatment: Apply generously to dry hair from roots to ends. Let sit for 15–30 minutes, then rinse and follow with your favorite Poofy Organics shampoo.”
