Homemade deodorant & body scrub info

559437_371625826284197_856960097_nINSPIRED BY THIS POST!! All it took was 1 person to ask if I’d sell mine, and the rest is history 🙂

**For those new to my homemade deodorant, here’s a pretty extensive thread with my recipe, Q & A, FAQ’s, and testimonials. I’ll always gladly share this recipe with anyone interested (it resides in my “Stuff We Make” photo album), but know that not everyone has the time, energy or desire to gather all the ingredients and make their own, so this offer is for that crowd! Recipe: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=537190792963232&set=a.494009763948002.128085.397517646930548&type=3&theater

**So, what’s the cost? I want to put this 1st so you don’t get all excited and then realize it’s out of your budget- I hate it when that happens! I’m asking $9  per 4 oz glass jar  (Ball or Kerr Mason jar, made in USA!), there are no frills, no fluff, just a plain Mason jar. Flat rate shipping for 1-4 jars is $5-8 via the flat rate envelope.

Some frequently asked questions:

*Won’t this stain my clothing? No. Men & women who don’t shave their armpits may have to spend a few extra seconds making sure it’s rubbed in well, but just like any deodorant, it quickly absorbs into your skin.

*How do I apply it? Just rub a little dab on with your fingers. Or if you prefer you could transfer it from this glass jar into an empty deodorant stick (but it has to stay in the fridge). I prefer glass over plastic, and don’t mind applying it with my fingers. The natural stick deodorants I’ve used contain beeswax & other stabilizers to keep them from melting when warming up. These leave my pits waxy & greasy feeling, and definitely can stain clothing.

*Do I need to refrigerate it? No. But be aware that coconut oils melting point is 75 degrees. Once it reaches this temp it will liquefy & ingredients can settle out. You can find somewhere cooler in your house to store it, refrigerate it, or shake it up & apply it with fingers or a small brush. It’s an absolutely perfect consistency around 72 degrees, but the quality of the product doesn’t change whether it’s a bit firmer, or runnier…

Purpose of the ingredients:

Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal so it’s a perfect ingredient for deodorant. I use organic, unrefined, cold-pressed, extra virgin coconut oil which means more nutrients are left in it to benefit your skin.

Arrowroot powder & cornstarch: both help absorb moisture. I use Bob’s Redmill Arrowroot powder, it’s not organic, but non-GMO. I use organic (non-GMO) cornstarch which I purchase at my food co-op through Frontier.

Baking Soda: helps keep bacteria from growing. I purchase Bob’s Redmill.

Tea tree oil: has antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic properties.

Scent options at this time: Lavender (organic), orange (organic), lemongrass (organic, not safe during pregnancy, fine during breastfeeding), peppermint (organic), rose geranium, patchouli, cedarwood, or a combo of your choice, or unscented of course (my fave is orange, lavender & a couple drops of peppermint).

**Some with sensitive skin can have issues with baking soda. My original recipe left it out, but I felt it wasn’t working as well as I’d like- I felt it worked MUCH better with baking soda in it. If you know that you have very sensitive skin, I can definitely leave out the baking soda, or cut the amount in 1/2 (there’s 1/5 TBSP per jar). Also, I make extra strength with 2-3 times as much baking soda, for those who need something stronger, and don’t have sensitive skin ($.50-$.75 extra/jar, no breaks on multiples).

So, send me a message if interested, and we’ll take it from there!

 OATMEAL & SUGAR BODY SCRUB:

Ingredients: organic coconut oil, organic oats, organic raw turbinado sugar, and your choice of scents: organic orange (my personal favorite), lavender, rose geranium, peppermint, unscented, or a combo of your choice! It’s a wonderful exfoliator & moisturizer, and you’ll have no need for any lotion when you get out of the tub. I LOVE the stuff. This is slightly cheaper to make, I’ll sell it for $6 per 4 oz jar, shipping will still be $5 total to any location in the continental US, although purchasing multiple jars will save a little money, as I can use a flat rate box 🙂

Here is the thread with all the info on the body scrub: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=627514937264150&set=a.494009763948002.128085.397517646930548&type=3&theater.

I do, however it’s ~4 times much as it is in the US. For example, the $5 in the US flat rate envelope, which can ship 1-4 jars of deodorant, is $20 to send to Canada. Still, that isn’t a terrible deal, it brings the jars to $12 each for a 4 oz jar which lasts 4-6 months. But not many people are willing to pay that much for shipping…

I’m going to start sharing reviews I receive here, I get so much fabulous feedback, time to start consolidating it! “As a deodorant, it works far better than my regular (mass-market brand) deodorant I’d been using all my life. As an anti-perspirant, maybe not quite as good, but pretty close. That could just be because I don’t shave my armpits. I sometimes feel like I wonder if I’m getting sweat stains, but every time I check I’m not (and there is no smell at all). It’s just a little different feeling to get used to. I notice it more when I’m freshly showered – the few hours right afterward. The rest of the day and on days I don’t shower, I don’t notice it. Maybe just the clean body adapting to it? No stains on clothing (no white marks to have to deal with anymore!!) either. I really like the lavender scent, and I like the unscented, too. I’ve been putting it through various tests – like going to a party in a tight-fitting sweater, shoveling snow in a parka for an hour, etc (it passed all). I’m in Cleveland and it’s super cold out, so I haven’t been able to do a workout in the heat with it, but honestly, my whole body sweats when I go for a run, and I’d always shower afterward, so it doesn’t matter how that result turns out. So I’m a convert! Thanks for making it!”

Is it a subtle enough scent for a manly man to use it. My son is looking for a natural deodorant. He works outside a lot and therefore gets sweaty. I’m excited because I want to try it for myself.

From Angelica: “I used the deodorant for the first time today and I absolutely LOVE it! I have tried countless “natural” deodorants and none of them have ever worked. I was starting to think that I had to choose between using something with aluminum or not being so fresh. I’m so ecstatic that I have finally found something that works! Also, the fact that you share the recipe is pretty awesome. I’m looking forward to trying the scrub.”

From Christy: ” I am beyond thrilled with my deodorant! It wasn’t working as well as I thought it should, then finally it dawned on me- if I slather on more of the nasty chemical stuff if its not working how I want, maybe I should just apply more! That was all it took! I LOVE your deodorant:) I am also in love with your oatmeal sugar coconut oil scrub!! I use it to wash my face and my completion has never looked better!! Can you please tell me the sizes you sell it in? Can’t wait to order more!!
Thanks for all the you do!:)”

I seriously can’t wait to put it on :0) I made my husband try it this morning and I’m hoping it works well for him too. He has the most trouble with natural deodorant. I’m not sure if it’s his natural oils or what but fingers crossed! I would highly recommend it. Just wanted to share!”

I’ve received SO many fabulous reviews on my homemade deodorant, but none more so than this. Here’s the initial email I received: ” I have something called hyper hydrosis and i sweat really really heavily… Nothing I’ve tried has worked and i still continuously sweat. It’s highly embarrassing and nothing seems to take away the odor either… I’ve had people tell me that it smells like i put stuff on just to cover the smell (so embarrassing to explain my problem to others it brings me to tears)… Do you think this homemade stuff might be a good solution?”

I sent her a couple samples last week & heard from her yesterday (accompanied by a photo of her dry underarm): “This is unheard of… I’ve normally sweat through at least one shirt by now… This is the driest I’ve ever been…” She updated again at the end of the day to say she did sweat a little & will try reapplying mid day, which some do but most don’t need to. She’s seen a huge improvement. YAYYYY! People worry about giving me TMI all the time, and that’s really not a concern on my part! I LOVE helping people discover the power that TRULY natural products can have!! This made my day!!

From Laura: “Hi Jess! I finally made my own deodorant and it works great! We just brought the kids to Orlando for the week and I was a little worried but I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. I tried every “natural” brand out there and this is by far the best deodorant. Thanks so much for everything you do and for sharing all your insight! Another note: when I first started using it it worked great the first 2 weeks then I noticed it wasn’t working as well and I was smelling really bad. I was about to give up then I read an article about armpit detox and it said that once you switch to a natural product you armpit almost needs to detox from the commercial stuff. After a few weeks it was back to working great again and has been for months. Glad I stuck with it!!”

Also, I have been meaning to let you know, I have tried a few other natural deodorants, including Poofy, and yours is my favorite. I love my other Poofy products, and I think hers would be good for an average sweater, but for me, yours is best. Even the regular strength kept me fresher, and the extra strength is amazing! Just thought you should know.”

“Just had to share I tried your recipe for homemade deodorant and put it through the test for 2 weeks. I am so happy with the results. I have always been an antiperspirant kind of gal and have been searching for a natural alternative for about a year I’ve tried salt sticks, organic brands. Nothing has worked as well as your recipe. Thanks so much for sharing.”

From Melissa: “So I hate writing reviews. It’s awkward and then I feel like if I make the review too soon, the product stops working or craps out on me. I bought your deodorant about 2 months ago and have been using that ever since. After a month I threw out all my chemical deodorants and haven’t turned back. I got the orange one and love it. I smell like an orange sugar cookie! I just worked in the garden for over 45min it 80* temps, sweating like a pig but I smell fabulous. You can’t get any better than this stuff.”

Is this like a body wash that can be used every time you wash or is it like a sugar scrub that you use when you want exfoliate?
