Jolene Marty has been the co-admin of my main Eco-friendly USA page for ~3 of the 4 years I’ve had the page. I personally don’t wear make-up, she does & she is as devoted to label-reading as I am. So make-up questions go to her, and she has compiled this, it is a work in progress.
BEST OF THE BEST (100% of products have safe ingredients, are either certified organic or made with all organic ingredients, made in the USA, cruelty free)
Poofy Organics
Suncat Mineral Makeup
Au Naturale
Lauren Brooke
Simply Rustic
**If you happen to choose Poofy, purchasing through this link costs you no more than shopping directly from Poofy, it ships straight from them, I earn a bit of commission: https://ecofriendlyusa.poofyorganics.com/
STILL REALLY GOOD (these are still pretty darn good in terms of ingredients, just not the absolute best. They are cruelty free, might have an exception or two, and worth a look!)
Willow Tree Minerals (reviewed makeup line only, with a few exceptions in a few products, everything looks good. Do NOT recommend mascara)
NYR Organic (makeup line reviewed only most, ingredients are safe, not certified organic however many products have several organic ingredients in them also NOT made in US)
Faerie Organics (mineral makeup line ONLY, except their mascara, cruelty free, products are not certified organic but they use a lot of organic ingredients sourced in Oregon)
RMS Beauty (except their mascara and lip2cheek, line has safe ingredients in it, not certified organic but many organic ingredients, all ingredients are non-GMO)
Epic Mineral Beauty (except mascara due to non disclosure of ingredients; will update at later time, non-GMO ingredients, cruelty-free, made in the USA)
Cowgirl Dirt (except for the mascara, this line has safe ingredients, not certified organic but made with many organic ingredients, made in the USA)
Everyday Minerals (safe ingredients, not organic, doesn’t specify non-GMO or not on the few items that have corn, cruelty free, made in USA)
Rejuva Minerals (safe ingredients, except for pressed powder & pressed bronzer, made in USA, several organic ingredients used)
GREENWASHERS (I would avoid these, minus maybe a few items in the line, they are unsafe in their majority)
Jane Iredale (with a couple of exceptions in the face line)
Bare Essentials (original forumula loose powder is good only, everything has icky ingredients in it)
Physician’s Formula (filled with horrible ingredients)
Physician’s Formula Organic Wear (is it possible this line is worse?! A lot of bad stuff here)

Have you seen this one. A friend uses Living Natural make up. I was looking into it. It isn’t made in the US but it says certified organic. Check it out at anaturalhealthyhome.com. I am thinking about trying it.

Jolene’s response: “The living natural makeup I would not recommend. All but a few marked ingredients are NOT organic….anything liquid (mascara, liquid foundation/concealer etc) has GSE in it. It has soy and corn products which are high on the GMO list because they aren’t organic…also the Vitamin E says “Tocopherol acetate” which rates a 3 because it us the synthetic vitamin E….site doesn’t specify otherwise. I’d find something else especially for those prices.” GSE= Grapefruit Seed Extract.

Jolene looked into it: “Real purity looks really good, mostly organic ingredients. Would stay away from: perfume, blush, and vit e stick as there are ingredients of concern.”

So, Ava Anderson mascara is a thumbs down? I was going to buy it tonight.

Yes, I asked her to clarify that as the wording is confusing. She gives the mascara a thumbs down due to the Geogard Ultra, she’s rewriting that now, thanks for asking! Did you see my most recent Ava post, may be of interest: https://ecofriendlyusa.wordpress.com/2014/06/24/why-ava-anderson-remains-on-my-so-so-list/

I see that Lauren Brooke uses Neem oil in their creme foundation. Just wondering if that is safe to use during pregnancy/breast feeding. I don’t think it is if taken internally, but I wasn’t sure about topical application. Thoughts?

Sorry Nicole, just saw this now. I’m not positive on that one, I would contact them & ask, they should have the answer!

Great post! I use Willow Tree Minerals almost exclusively (not mascara 🙂 ) Could you say what the ‘few exceptions in a few products’ were? Thanks!

Here’s what Jolene said: “Liquid Eye Liner and Eye Primer both have Phenoxyethanol in them, other than that the ingredients are pretty standard for safe mineral makeup. took a quick look through a handful of products and there is Phenoxyethanol, GSE, and Japanese Honeysuckle in their bath and body line. So i only recommend the mineral makeup line (minus the 2 products listed above)”

Thanks 🙂 I was actually looking at one of the dragonfly items from simply rustic and one of them has NEEM oil. They have a note to avoid NEEM oil if pregnant or trying to become pregnant. I guess I should stop using my fiddlebumps bug spray, as it too contains NEEM oil. What other bug sprays do you like/recommend? Thanks for everything! Can’t wait for the August buying club order!!

I’m having very good luck with MamaSuds this summer, and Josiah’s Oils is great. Poofy’s is certified organic!

Poofy’s foundation contains zinc oxide. Isn’t that bad? Is cocos nucifera oil bad and if so why?

The concern with zinc comes from impurities, Poofy uses only the best-of-the best in every ingredient choice. Personally, I (Jess) don’t wear make-up, but for those that do, Poofy is among the safest you can get. And no, cocos nucifera is coconut oil, it’s GREAT!

I believe only three shades of the RMS beauty lip2cheek contain synthetic color pigments. These shades are curious, smile and beloved and contain red eyes. The other shades are safe and in my opinion much prettier! I especially like promise and demure.

First- I just wanted to thank you for sharing all of your thoughts and knowledge with us! 🙂 Second- I was looking into the Au Naturale Cosmetics. I am looking for a good crème/liquid foundation without all the crap in it! Their crème foundation contains mica and silica. Just wanted your input on these. I was told Silica suffocates your pores and causes acne. Any input would be great! Thanks!
