Why Ava Anderson remains on my So-So list

All opinions expressed below are my own, and are that, MY opinion.

It was recently brought to my attention that Ava Anderson Non-Toxic (AANT) has reformulated the products that contained Geogard Ultra as a preservative, and replaced it with radish root ferment. This is without a doubt great news in my book! Less families being exposed to sodium benzoate in multiple products daily is fabulous, especially since many didn’t realize they were being exposed to it as the name Geogard Ultra didn’t truthfully disclose the 2 ingredients being used (sodium benzoate & gluconolactone). So, time to move them back to my best-of-the-best list, right? No. In the past year or so, numerous issues have come up with these products that I have a great deal of mistrust in them: the products, the labels, and the company. I’m not going to repeat the allegations, which would make a very long list, as there’s a chance some of them are not true, and I don’t want to slander anyone without having proof of said allegations. I can tell you the allegations are numerous, concerning, and I do happen to believe many of them. So, what are the facts? Most recently this issue arose which really, really bothers me: they launched a line of essential oils & claimed they were certified organic. Immediately I, and many others, commented on their wall asking how this was possible, here’s how that played out:

Jessica Brandt How can they be certified organic if none of your other products are? That means your facilities for repackaging are now USDA certified? I don’t see the seal on the labels…

Ava Anderson Non Toxic Hi Jessica, we do not have the USDA certification on our products but all of our organic ingredients have always been certified! smile emoticon
  • Remove
Ava Anderson Non Toxic We chose not to have the seal on our products as it is very expensive and really all it gets you is lots of paperwork, it also doesn’t require 100% of ingredients to be safe so we have seen multiple cases of products with the seal that we would not use or recommend and therefore we always go back to “at Ava Anderson, it’s all about the ingredients” happy to answer any other questions you have! smile emoticon
  • Remove
Ava Anderson Non Toxic http://tilth.org oregon tilth is one of our certifiers of our organic ingredients smile emoticon

OK. I could go on & on about this issue, their response is infuriating. They are NOT certified by the Oregon Tilth, or any other certifying body.  It’s an outright lie. They’re willing to let the companies they purchase from go through the expense & paperwork to be certified, but they themselves don’t feel it worth it. You know how much it would cost them to get certified? Without knowing exactly what they make each year, by all accounts it’s millions of dollars, the CAP for companies making $5,000,000+ is $10,500. You’re telling me that’s considered expensive to a multi-million dollar company? One whose owners are independently wealthy to boot? As I said, I could go on & on. To make a long story short, several people asked about who their certifier was. Every, single comment raising any question about this issue was hidden or deleted. I’ve also been told by former Ava reps that even internally, in their closed private groups any question regarding ingredient sources, the lack of organic certification, etc are immediately removed. Without the USDA certification, there is NO guarantee whatsoever that they’re using the best organic ingredients on the market, or that they’re even organic at all. There’s NO oversight without that certification.

Update on Essential Oil issue, I was right, they were in violation of the USDA regulations: 12/2015: https://ecofriendlymamausa.com/2015/12/15/ava-anderson-their-not-so-certified-organic-eos/

Past issues that lead to me being wary of their claims: Many felt their diaper cream contained zinc oxide, but the label didn’t list it. Turns out eventually they did come out & say “oops, yes, there is zinc oxide in there, but don’t worry, it’s just a small amount”,  and then they added it to the label. Of course since they don’t make the products themselves they were able to pin it on the manufacturer & take no personal responsibility whatsoever. Why does this matter: What if your child was deathly allergic to zinc oxide, Zinc oxide is not cloth diaper safe, as it repels water, and we as the consumer have the right to know every, single ingredient in our products. So, this is where the trust issue comes into play. As with the CA baby reformulation scandal (Google the term if you’re unfamiliar with that), once something like this happens, my trust in the company & products is lost forever, and CA Baby will forever remain on my Greenwashers list due to that.

The company says they can’t afford to become certified organic, even though the Anderson’s are an independently wealthy family not in this for them money (relayed to me by Ava’s Mom Kim when we still had open lines of communication), just in it to make the world a better place. They have posted erroneous info on their FB page in the past trying to degrade the USDA certified label, until being called out on their mistruths & removing the posts. I’ve received several messages from people telling me they heard from an Ava rep that only 60% organic ingredients are needed for the USDA label, and that’s what Poofy uses, where AANT uses 100% organic ingredients, they just don’t feel the need for certification. This is all COMPLETELY wrong, and it seriously irritates me that such lies are being spread. There are much, much smaller lines on my best-of-the-best list that have made it a priority, and are affording it. I, and many others believe AANT could never become certified organic as several of the products are not truthfully disclosing what is honestly, actually in them, many of the ingredient lists just don’t add up. And this is not just my opinion, this has been expressed to me by many different sources, many who are making their own similar products and are extremely knowledgeable about ingredients & what it takes to make a product work. After reading thousands of ingredient labels myself, I agree, things like the bubble bath, dish soap just don’t add up to being the effective product many rave about. Many have alleged there’s no way they’re using Essential Oils as the labels state. I’ve heard from certified aromatherapists who share the opinion that the products contain synthetic fragrance oils.

I really, honestly think someday these products will be tested and, just like the diaper cream, be found to contain additional ingredients not listed. If I had the time or knowledge how to go about initiating this process myself, I would love to. I know there are many of you who love this line, and think it’s all it says it is. I know many will feel I have some grudge against these products, some ulterior motive, and that is not the case, but I understand why you might think that, and that’s OK with me. I have nothing to gain by where they fall on my list, just my own ethics & morals to protect. I have several lines on my “best” list that are not certified organic: Fiddlebump’s, Josiah’s Oils, MamaSuds, Simply Rustic, all of which are Work-from-home-Mom operations, and although they are using almost exclusively organic ingredients, I would never expect them to become certified. But, a line like Ava Anderson has absolutely no excuse not to, unless they have something to hide, which I believe they do. Please, prove me wrong, get your line certified, and you’ll move up to my Best-of-the-Best list. The fact that their products are NOT certified organic, and are twice as much as many products that ARE certified is secondary, if you are willing to pay twice as much, that’s up to you. Which line IS certified organic? Poofy Organics. Truly the best of the very best on the market, certified by the USDA, with absolutely no ingredients of concern. Please, do yourself & your family a favor & ask some serious questions, and do some comparing of the 2 lines, I’m pretty certain you’ll come to the same conclusions I have. Here are several past threads, if you have a few hours to spare reading all the comments, I think they’ll help shed light on my position. I hope this all makes sense, and I hope to be proven wrong.

Sloggers, proudly made in USA, perfect for outdoors!

10497088_1180410928641212_5703992770916676227_o

I got my Sloggers yesterday & am loving them! I wore the shoes for 4 hours today while working at my Dad’s Greenhouse & they’re perfect for working their for sure as I’m dealing with water & dirt daily. They don’t come in 1/2 sizes so I got the 9’s & the shoes are slightly big with very thin socks on, 8 1/2 would’ve been perfect for me for those. But the boots are perfect as a size 9. I put them on & my Son immediately said “Mom, lets go find some puddles”, which we did & had a lot of fun stomping around! I loved all the cute designs they had to choose from! I can’t believe I just found out about this company a couple weeks ago, thanks to a post in this page! They have a great label displaying how proud they are to have been making shoes in the US for 60some years! They come in many adorable patterns. Info from the company: “They are Latex Free and “Vegan Friendly” but they are made out of Medical Grade PVC. Also, please keep in mind that our material is prop 65 compliant, meets and exceeds ALL federal and state safety regulations, INCLUDING the most stringent CSP regulations for children’s toys and pacifiers (not that you were planning on letting your child teeth on a pair of Sloggers! Although dogs do sometimes, so it’s good to know that they are safe!). I hope that helps answer your concerns.” I really appreciate this fact too: Commitment to Sustainability:In addition to utilizing Best Manufacturing Practices (BMP’s) regarding the environment, Sloggers attempts to maximize the amount of recycled material they put back into their shoes. Currently, they can add up to 50% of mixed recycled material in their soles, and they are able to use 100% of the clear material scraps back into the uppers.
The company also encourages you to send your shoes or boots back to them when they have finally reached the end of the road. They will grind them up and add them back into a new pair of shoes.”!

Swiggydiggydoo Subscription Box Service Review

10933309_1121961384486167_1502891985_n

Review of a subscription box service: Swiggydiggydoo.com, based out of PA. I’m so thankful Lauren found me & sent me this initial message: “Hi! I own a new subscription box for babies and toddlers that features 3-5 eco-conscious, organic and modern products, plus a custom designed, limited edition shirt each month.” I love her motto: “ clever & fun & responsibly done”. She had just sent out her 1st ever box in Dec when she sent me that message, and asked if I’d be interested in a Jan box, which of course I was. Her Dec box had featured all made in USA items (except the t-shirt which is made in Honduras, but printed in the US). She let me know she wasn’t 100% committed to US made, but would definitely be featuring many items made here. And indeed, just like Dec, the Jan box was all made here, except the t-shirt again. A box for 1 month is $39.95, which I feel is a good deal for all it contained, and the fact that it includes shipping which is never cheap. The deadline to subscribe to next month’s box is the 25th.

You choose the gender & age the box is for, up to 4 for a shirt size. You can buy 1 box, or get a full year subscription & be guaranteed a box monthly. I’ve never participated in anything like this, I know there are several such services out there, conscious box being a popular one. I have to say, it was really fun to get our box & be completely surprised by what was in it. It was very fun for the kids, and fun for me as well. I will definitely be getting a box in my daughter’s B-day month, and probably Christmas as well. I’ll be keeping an eye on what she features every month, but from chatting with Lauren, reading her website/Fb pages, and based on what has been in the 1st two boxes, I know she has high standards. You get a little sheet in your box that tells you who made each item, and why she feels it was worthy of being included. For example: ‘stuffed animal by itsy bitsy baby cakes. We love this etsy shop for its cute designs and use of oeko-tex standard 100 wool felt.”

A lot of thought goes into the packaging of each box. She selects the smallest possible box to fit the items for the month, so she doesn’t have to use any fill. She uses a local box supplier that sells recycled or previously used (and inspected) boxes. Her shipping labels, box tape and paper for the insert are all green or made from recycled products. The tape is made in the USA. The labels aren’t, but they are bpa-free and the only ones she could find that were. These are all important details to her, and to me too!

Our family is thoroughly enjoying several of the items in the box! I love that the shirt is long-sleeved making it appropriate for the season, and it’s super adorable. The crocheted headband/crown is super, super cute! Unfortunately my 18m old won’t leave it on, I keep trying & have hopes she’ll get used to it because it’s just adorable. The 4 piece puzzle challenged my almost 4 year old for quite a while, he now has it figured out, but I was super happy to learn of Topozoo as a new vendor to add to my made in USA list! The felt beaver we received has been lugged around the house by my Daughter for a couple days now since receiving the box, it’s very cute! I have quite a few nursing/teething necklaces already so will pass this one on to a new Mama friend of mine who I’m sure will enjoy it! And we have another vapor rub on hand should we need it.

Please, head on over & ‘like’ her Facebook page to stay on top of all the happenings, and visit her website. I’d love to know if you get a box, and what your thoughts are! If you do order, please put me, Jess, as referral. I will receive a thank you, she just likes to know where the traffic is coming from.

We love our Anchor Hocking mugs!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We added a few more Anchor Hocking mugs to our collection, and as you can see, use them for all beverages not just coffee. We started with 6 of the larger mugs on the left about 6 months ago. I really, really like them! My Husband has a tendency to take them to his shop & leave a few out there, takes them on the go as travel mugs even so has broke a couple & usually a couple are missing. So I ordered 4 of the Rio mugs on the right, a bit smaller, but still a nice size for a cup of coffee, or juice, or water. They were $2.89 each on Amazon, a price I can definitely live with! My plates & bowls are holding up really well so far, and hopefully soon we’ll be getting a dishwasher & I expect them to do even better in there vs getting clinked around in a sink full of dishes. VERY happy with my Anchorware, proudly made in Ohio, completely free of lead, cadmium and other heavy metals, and very affordable!

A very good read for all parents– The five words that changed everything.

The Manager in My Home & the Five Words that Changed Everything

I was so glad I read this article the other day. I’m a very laid back Mama, but lately had been really frustrated by my 2 kiddos wanting to help me do dishes every day. I found myself saying things like “can’t I just do the dishes alone while you 2 play”? It took forever to get them done, they’d get water everywhere, I just wanted the darn dishes done. After reading this article I looked at the situation differently, and switched up our routine. Our sink is in an island, so I switched how we were approaching it & now they both cozy up to the sink on side-by-side chairs on one side, with me on the opposite side. Long story short, I looked at myself, and my frustration & thought “is this the Mom I really want to be?”. Of course I want to encourage them helping with any chores they can, it’s never too early to start. We’ve had similar issues over dinner prep. My Son, who will be turning 4 soon, has ALWAYS wanted to be in the kitchen with me. And some nights I’ve found myself saying the same: “I just want to get dinner ready by myself”. But you know what? At 4, he’s actually able to really, truly help with some things. He peels garlic, tears lettuce, cuts soft things like cucumbers with a butter knife. The other night, he made cucumber salad just about entirely by himself. And he really enjoys it, and even thanks me for letting him help. And he boasts to Dada with pride about the contributions he made. Establishing a love of being in the kitchen is certainly something I want to instill in my Son, so I try really, really hard to get over my desire to just get it done. So what if it takes twice as long? That’s secondary. This article really, really is a wonderful read, and I’m so glad it was shared with me. I hope you’ll take a couple minutes to read it & look at the situations in your family routine that are causing you stress in a new light.

Be the Change You Wish to See in 2015

1-1200x661

One of my favorite quotes of all time!

How do I know I’m being the change I wish to see? I took my Son to see some Holiday Rotary Lights an hour away last week, it was well worth it, we had a GREAT time. On the way home he said “Mom, I’m thirsty” and I realized I forgot to grab our water bottle which we NEVER leave home without, at least not for longer trips like this, I’m so good about remembering it usually. We were with my Mom & Sister & needed to stop for gas anyway so I said “Ok, we’ll have to buy some water I guess” as we were still 45 min from home on the return trip, and he was really thirsty.  My Son: “what, we have to buy water”? He looked at me very puzzled & said “Mom, but what will it come in?”.  He honestly was perplexed & had no idea what to expect! And it dawned on me: In his almost 4 years of life, he’d never once had bottled water, not ONCE. He didn’t know what to expect at all. I felt both great that we’d made it that long, and sad that I’d forgotten our bottle this time, as what if I could’ve made it a few more years, or indefinitely?! Anyway, we had a nice talk about how avoiding plastic is a very good thing,  as well as how much they charge for water & how important it is to make sure we never leave home without it again. This is just one small example of the ways I see my Son, who is growing up SO FAST, being a little mini-me, and it makes me very, very proud. We know that our children look up to us, and learn so much from us even when not outright teaching them lessons! So please, be the change YOU wish to see in the world this year!

Our favorite Made in USA toys/vendors

In no particular order:

Roys Toys Building Logs—Lincoln Logs that are actually made in the US! I got them from Pure Play Kids but have even seen them at Wal-Mart (although I know many of you boycott them, just saying, they’re pretty widely available).

The Puzzle People—we own 5 of their puzzles & other than books, they’re some of our most used & cherished items by far! They take a looooong time to get your order to you, so seriously order NOW for this Holiday season, you won’t be disappointed! https://www.facebook.com/397517646930548/photos/a.568349859847325.144572.397517646930548/718713404810969/?type=3&theater

Smiling Tree Toys—We own a lot of their items & cherish them all. I feel they’re quite affordable, and they are exactly the small Mom/Pop type business I had in mind to support when launching this page. They are also a vendor for the upcoming Nov Buying Club. We have: the regular & deluxe building block sets, smiling moon balancer, camera, memory tiles, lacing/tracing puzzle, penguin bowling game, shape sorter, ornaments, I’m giving my niece the xylophone for her upcoming B-day, I’m sure I’m forgetting some items. Everything is amazing quality & they are a favorite of mine for sure! https://www.facebook.com/397517646930548/photos/a.568349859847325.144572.397517646930548/636647163017594/?type=3&theater

Pure Play Kids—Absolutely love Pure Play as well! We have numerous things from them, and I love their shop by age function which helps narrow things down. I even have a 15% off coupon for them, good the remainder of the year! https://www.facebook.com/397517646930548/photos/a.568349859847325.144572.397517646930548/1015990168416623/?type=3&theater

Maple Landmark Town Train Set—just absolutely love this, it’s much, much cheaper on Amazon then directly through them unfortunately. https://www.facebook.com/397517646930548/photos/a.430947503587562.117422.397517646930548/848011088547866/?type=3&theater

Wooden kitchen—One of our most used items as well, my Son LOVES his kitchen. Ours is on loan from a local family, if I was in the market for one I’d get it from Elves & Angels. I’ve accessorized it with this & that: unused fondue pots, stainless steel & wooden items I’ve picked up at garage sales, and we have a few things from Green Toys for it: the sandwich & pizza shop and the pot & pan set. Wooden eggs from Pure Play. https://www.facebook.com/397517646930548/photos/a.430947503587562.117422.397517646930548/586659754683002/?type=1&theater

Beka art easel—my Mom has purchased this for my Son for Christmas this year, I CAN’T WAIT to get it! We love art supplies from Wee Can Too, Eco-Kids (available from the Buying Club), and Filana crayons.

Books—I pick up books whenever I see them at garage sales & thrift stores. ENDLESS entertainment for very cheap. I very, very rarely buy new books. Hard to find made in US, but I couldn’t leave them off this list!

Accepting help from a stranger

Try it sometime, it’s really not that bad. You’ll probably be glad you did, as I was this morning….

After months of saving, researching, acclimating, my Husband was finally ready to install our bamboo flooring. I decided it’d be best to leave the house for 24 hours to let him tackle it without the kiddos & I in the house, and to not have to listen to the banging & staple gun going off. So, I packed up the kids & headed 1/2 hour away to a local hotel with a great indoor waterpark perfectly suited to my kids ages (1 & 3 1/2). I knew it’d be a bit rough with both of them running in separate directions, keeping them both happy in the same area, common concerns with 2 kids. But I’m used to juggling them, and armloads of stuff at the same time. It went OK, we had some rough times when Baby Girl wanted to do this & Big Brother wanted to do that.

This morning it was time to go check out the continental breakfast. They had a pretty deluxe version, make your own waffles, pancakes, scrambled eggs even! I walked in to a room full of childless adults with my 2 kids in tow & got lots of looks. I went & grabbed the only open table & went to get a high chair & booster seat for the kids. And an elderly lady approached & said “please, let me help you”. “No, I got it, thanks” I said with a smile, and accomplished the task at hand of arranging seating for us. With that done, it was on to getting some food. My Son wanted a waffle, which we had to wait to make as someone else was making one at the time. So I got a banana for Sissy, put her in the high chair & proceeded to pursue the waffle-making. Well, Sissy didn’t want to be in her chair eating her banana, she wanted to be checking out all the fun making the waffle, so she started to fuss. The same elderly lady approached me again “I’m done eating, my Husband is reading the paper, I miss my Grandkids terribly, I would love to help you while you get your family’s breakfast in order”. And I gave in. She walked around the room with my Little Lady while I made some scrambled eggs & a waffle, got some oatmeal for Baby Girl & got us all situated & we ate. She did not leave my sight, and all were happy in the end.

I just wanted to share this as we all really can use some help sometimes. Yes, I’m used to doing things on my own & CAN do it, but I have nothing to prove, and nothing to lose by accepting a hand from a kind, caring stranger who is offering. I know I’ll be offering help to a Mama who is trying to juggle too much sometime in my future, when my kiddos are grown & I’m sitting by myself reading a newspaper, I hope that Mama will accept my offer 🙂

And the floor, OH MY, it is sooooo beautiful. We got home today as he was nailing the very last board into place, and it is just gorgeous! I’m so proud of him for being able to do this for us, and so proud of the hard work & effort we both put forth to save up the money for it! After much research we went with Cali Bamboo, for anyone interested!

Why I want to get chickens!

10550068_1004456712903302_4325958746513253681_o

I posted the other day that we normally get them from our friends farm, but every now & then they run low so I bought some at my food co-op the other day, for $4/dozen, and they just don’t compare! This photo doesn’t even do them justice, but the one on the left is from a local farmer who has 5,000 birds in a huuuuuuge barn. Yes, they are cage-free, no they do not see the light of day & are fed solely organic grain. On the right, free-ranging, bug-eating, occasionally a bit of grain to supplement, they are SO orange & delicious. The pale yellow ones just look & taste like they’re lacking, and even my 3 1/2 year old expressed an immediate dislike of the yellow ones, telling me “Mama, I DO NOT like yellow yolks, I like orangey yolks”

Also, when I was commuting to college I’d stop by the farm with 5,000 chickens to pick up eggs for my food co-op, and literally vomited once & left gagging every, single time, the smell was soooooo horrible, I couldn’t do it anymore! So another case in point, NOT ALL ORGANIC food is created equally…. And I’m determined to have eggs by next summer, while our friends are able to mostly keep us stocked, we go through a ton of eggs & I don’t want to rely on anyone else to provide for us!

What I’ve learned about lead…

A lot! It’s amazing how little you know about something until your life is directly impacted by it. My lead awareness journey began when someone shared a post with me by Tamara of Mislead: America’s Secret Epidemic (FB page, and movie in the works). Her post was accusing Earthpaste of being a greenwasher, as the bentonite clay they used as a base for their toothpaste contained lead, and that no amount was acceptable. My mission is to out Greenwashers, and I had used & been promoting the heck out of Earthpaste & Poofy Organics (also clay based) for quite some time. But I could not ignore her post, the info it provided, or the chance that my Son could have an elevated level as that was the only toothpaste he had ever used, and we’d been using it ~18 months. I had him tested for lead at 1 year (generally part of a wellness check in most states), and he was a 1 which is great (0 of course would be optimal). But, other than for an ear infection around 18 months, we hadn’t been in as he is super healthy & I don’t do well checks unless I have a concern.

So, at 3 years old I took him in & he got the simple, easy finger prick test. He came back with a 2, so yes, in 2 years it had gone up. I wrote this post about toothpaste at that time, I just wasn’t sure what to think: https://ecofriendlymamausa.com/2014/05/15/lead-in-bentonite-clay-based-toothpaste-is-any-amount-safe/. A range of 0-4 is generally accepted as no cause for concern, per my doc office & many sites I looked up. But according to Tamara, someone I consider to be an expert, the elevation from a 1-2 was definitely cause for concern & the source should be figured out & eliminated. The effects of lead poisoning can take months/years to display, and are serious: sensory processing issues, ADD like symptoms, decreased IQ, headaches, many serious concerns! Tamara knows all about this as she has 2/4 Sons that were poisoned during a home renovation project & have issues years later.

And that’s when I started researching lead. And wow, it’s complex & it is crazy how many lives this affects in the U.S. I started looking at all the possible sources that could contribute to an elevated level: old paint is probably the #1 cause, lead paint was banned in 1978 but many older homes will still have it underneath newer coats. Water, soil, toys, dinnerware, playgrounds, root vegetables, the list goes on & on. My daughter turned 1 in July, so we took her in for her 1st test. I totally expected it to come back a 1, as my Son’s had, and was shocked when I found out it was a 3! And she had never used any toothpaste, so that made me feel once again that the toothpaste did not contribute to my Son’s elevated level. So, I started addressing the top source potentials:

Our house was built in 1998 and painted in 2000, so no concern there. Lead solder in pipes is often suspect, but my in-laws built this house & I was able to verify they didn’t use that, so we scratched that from the list.

We tested our well water. We had just done an annual well test but only received results that there were no nitrates or bacteria (thankfully!), I had to call & see if lead was part of an annual test & no, it’s not so we sent in an additional sample. That came back all clear. 10 ppm is considered OK by the EPA, 5 ppm by the most cutting edge, harshest critics. Ours was 2ppm.

We tested our soil. We live in rural WI, and are the only house within site (except in the winter when there are no leaves on the trees, we can see 2 houses ½ mile across the valley). Nothing existed prior to our house being built in 1998, so I thought there was no way possible we’d have lead in our soil. Lead is naturally occurring in some soils in ppm of ~40-50. Ours came back 3.8ppm!

I was positive that 98% of our toybox was not in question, but went through it & weeded out the following items (below) (mostly arrived thanks to our in-laws who go to tons of rummage sales & drag home some undesirables). I sent them in to Tamara who uses her $40,000 testing gun. I included a plate we had just retired in favor of glass Anchor Hocking tableware, even though my kids hadn’t eaten off them, just in case. Everything came back free of lead, mercury, cadmium & arsenic EXCEPT the yellow Fisher Price syringe which tested very high, see this post: https://www.facebook.com/397517646930548/photos/pb.397517646930548.-2207520000.1406057746./970978659584441/?type=3&theater.

The jingle bell bracelet also came back quite high, but my kiddos had never touched it, I just sent it in as a curiosity as I knew jewelry was often suspect. Costume jewelry and cheap jewelry are definite suspects if you’re trying to figure out an elevated level & your kids have access to those items. I was very happy that most of the items I sent it, some made in China, tested negative. If you go to the Mislead page on FB you will find TONS of photos of things she’s tested- it’s crazy how high most vintage dinnerware (Pyrex, etc) is, and I highly recommend getting rid of any vintage anything you have, in favor of new. I know it’s not what most want to hear, but for the safety of you & your family, it should be sent to a landfill (not eco-friendly I know, but this is a SERIOUS issue)! The regulations are 100 times more stringent today than they were in the70’s-80’s!

And I was also tested, as my Baby Girl nursed exclusively for 6m & we took food very slowly, so she was still getting a lot of nutrition from me at 1 year, as all the above tests came back all clear, I was more & more concerned that I was the problem. Nope, mine came back a 1 via a vein draw (way more accurate than the finger prick).

The things I’ve heard from parents: One Mama had her 4 year old come back with a BLL of 11!! Which is VERY high, I’m worried about a 2 & 3 here. Her doc said it was acceptable & NOT TO WORRY!!! One Mama had her daughter test a 1 at 9 months, and wanted to follow-up at 3 years but her doc wouldn’t order it, saying it was fine at 9 months so not to worry- SERIOUSLY?!?! A Mama was told by her pedi “no, we don’t test for lead here (as part of an annual wellness exam), you’ll have to go to a natural/alternative center for that, and pay out of pocket- again, SERIOUSLY?! Several Mamas on WIC have told me they can’t even find out the number, they are told it’s OK if it’s under a 3.3 or in one case a 5. Well, whether it’s a 3.2 or a 1 does matter, and we should have the right to know! So again, this is a super complex issue, and it’s really up to us, the families looking out for our loved ones, to be educated & aware of this issue. As I opened with, until this affected my family in just a small way, it was completely off my radar! I highly recommend you get your kids tested once/year. If your insurance won’t pay for it, pay out of pocket (I know that isn’t possible for some, but if at all possible!) In conclusion, I’ve decided not to retest my daughter using the vein draw (again, a lot more accurate) but I do feel her 3 was a false positive. Lead has a ~45 day ½ life in our bodies, and iron & calcium-rich foods greatly help the body process lead. If we are calcium deficient, lead is soaked up into our bones in its place- scary, huh? I will retest her in 6m to 1 year. At this time, my Son is still using Earthpaste & Poofy’s clay-based option, in addition to the non-clay based option Poofy came out with to offer us another option (amazing of them!). Any questions? J
